Reflective essay
My time at ACLC has taught me to be responsible for my work and actions. My desire to be different from others, gives me high self esteem. My empathy makes me highly sociable. Being able to connect with anybody helps me understand where the person is coming from, and makes it easier for me to help. I don’t try to compare myself to others and don’t copy their goals. When I was in eighth grade a classmate of mine bragged about having straight A’s. I didn’t mind her much because I don’t compare myself to her. My main goals are to graduate high school, get accepted into college, and be happy in a career that I love. My best quality is how generous and selfless I am. I put a lot of energy into community service as a Red Cross and Key club member and I value others needs over my own. Being involved in community service exercises responsibility, such as when I volunteer to remove the aspirins from the first aide kits. If an individual takes an expired aspirin it could be harmful. It’s the same with nursing, one false move and a patient’s life is in jeopardy.
Communication is a major skill I use and cannot be without. It goes hand and hand with leadership. A leader that doesn’t communicate is unsuccessful. I use communication to express my opinions, ideas, feelings, and stand up for what is right. When I was in leadership, I communicated when I wanted to change or add to an idea. I also used communication to enforce the rules of the school. A great speaker must also be a good listener. My friends feel that I’m a good listener. They come to me with personal problems. I relate to my English class a lot. Recently we learned how to write an essay using different perspectives. I formed a correlation between math and science. In calculus we are debunking the moon landing hoax. Often Carlton would relate back to physics. He would say, ”Ok, you’ve all taken physics, what’s velocity”. I would blurt out the speed with time.
Knowing how to learn, creative thinking, decision making, and problem solving are skills I use today. There are many ways to learn. I learn by hearing seeing, and practicing. It helps when the facilitator demonstrates something like a math problem; it sinks in when the teacher explains the process step by step. I use creative thinking when I have to work on a project. Last year in World History, we had a choice of what form our project could be. I wanted to be creative and made a three dimensional timeline of the major events in space history. I often use decision making and problem solving when working on projects for school. Like when my partner and i have differing opinions.
Many skills are important for being an interactive learner. First is being a team player. When planning project I pitch in my ideas, helpful suggestions, and hard work. For example, last summer I was a delegate at the Red Cross Leadership Development Conference. Groups of campers were instructed to create a boat out of construction paper, toothpicks, and tape. I facilitated the progress by suggesting a box design to maximize the surface area. In Senior Sem I try to suggest possible ways to do things, and volunteer for many tasks.
Another interpersonal skill I use is helping others to learn by teaching. On the first day of school, I taught a sixth grader how to open her locker. At home I always help my brother with his Chemistry homework. I always speak my mind and encourage others to do the same. I am a strong believer in working for a solution that benefits everyone. I am a peer counselor and it is my duty to listen to both sides of the story and find a middle ground. I embrace the diversity at my school; being able to understand others makes it easy to work with all sorts of people.
Technology plays a big part in my life. For example, I use the computer to do my homework, and computers provide a wealth of knowledge at the push of a button. For example, if I have to type an essay for English class, I can use the computer to research popular culture. Computers are also useful for typing up homework in general. We have an upcoming project where we are required to make a presentation. I can use PowerPoint or Prezi. Prezi is similar to PowerPoint but moves in different ways, has different designs and is more time consuming. Knowing how to use excel is useful for science experiments, as well as Calculus. Being tech smart is useful for when you are on a robotics team and no one wants to code.
Applicable skills to me are knowing how to learn, creative thinking, decision making and problem solving. I try to be different from the group and sympathize. Communication is important when collaborating. People in general should be willing to help those in need. Technology knowledge can be useful in multiple ways. Aclc has helped shaped me to be a more social and outgoing person. Before this school I had no friends and hardly talked to anybody. The initial chaos of the center gave me a school to love and best friends. This has helped me to develop confidence and be able to speak my mind. In addition my time at Aclc has exposed me to technology, without it I have never would have used a Prezi.
