Internship closing report
8/23/13
At the start of the internship I was interested in the experience of what is was like working in a dentist office. During my time at Teodoro E. Eusebio dentistry I was involved in communication as well as problem solving. The internship taught me what to expect in a professional work place.
At first I didn’t know what to expect. I didn’t know what an internship was. Abegail my overseer trained me really well. I gained the skills needed to perform the tasks given to me. As an Intern I was able to File, answer the phone, and inform patients of appointments. I did patient chart work and file organization when asked to make copies.
I arrived on time to the work site. I also completed every job with care and importance. I took extra time to make sure the files were in correct places. As an intern I was respectful and followed the rules carefully.
There were a few challenges in which I helped with. The first is a language barrier. Some patients spoke both Tagalog and English. If they wanted to speak Tagalog the client will talk with my overseer. Patients would speak English to me. Another obstacle came with the chart pulling. The charts were organized by the first two letters of the patient’s last name.
The trouble was they could be in four different places. The charts were also arranged in the patients who were insured or not. At times, it happened that the charts I was looking for had been pulled. At first I was confused when answering the phone. There were 3 ringing at the same time. I was also admittingly shy to answer the phone as I didn’t have experience talking with clients before.
During the internship, I realized it is a challenge to obtain the experience needed in the work force. I learned that team work plays a big part of the success of the work place. At work, you have to be committed and take things seriously. Interns need to be supported and have patience and understanding to thrive. I gained experience in the functioning of a dental medical office. I also practiced the skills needed by a receptionist. I practiced people and technological skills. By practicing necessary skills, I have also learned about the dental field. I have experienced the importance of what this field provides us.

Internship logs
3/22/2013
Today was the first day of my internship. For two hours I cut insurance slips for the clients to fill in after the were greeted. I answered the phone, as well as called patients to inform them of upcoming appointments. I also greeted patients at the front desk.
3/23/2013
I cut more insurance slips as well as filed and pulled out patients’ charts. I expect the internship to be business like, serious, encountering lots of paper work, and taking and holding calls. I find that it is useful to speak 2 languages is an advantage. Most of the patients speak tagalog around employees and intern expect it. The skill I learned today was communication, you have to be able to talk to people and know what your duties are in order to better serve them.
5/17/2013
I cut more insurance slips, and pulled and filed charts. Today was a three hour day.
5/24/13
Today I pulled charts, It takes a bit of practice. For instance the folders are located in about 5 different places, or some patients pay in cash or have insurance. It gets really tiring looking in the various places. I often spend an hour looking for files that have already been pulled. For this reason communication is important. If I had asked my time would have been put to better use.
5/25/13
Today I pulled charts for the patients with a Thursday appointment. Today I learned that rules even apply to Interns. For my workplace the employees are supposed to have your phone on vibrate or silent. Your bag must be stowed away because it can be a hazard. Even if you're behind the front desk you should take your call outside, or in the break room.
5/31/13
There are always charts that need to be filed or pulled so I did that.
Today I had the luck of cutting insurance slips. The location for the files still poses a problem. Today I’m going to research what an internship is and what it takes to achieve it.
6/7/13
I performed the same duties today pulling charts, and cutting insurance slips. It is my favorite part of the job to greet people. Its where you get to interact and practice skills and see what needs to be improved.
6/8/13
I am still challenged by the organization of the charts. A common identifier is that all folders are marked with the first and second letter of their last names. There are insurance and cash patients. There are two book cases full of patients.
6/28/13
I think i’m starting to get the feel of chart pulling. I’m also getting the hang of answering the phone to. I mean theres three to choose from and they all ring at the same time.
6/29/13
Today I answered the phone, filed pulled charts and cut insurance slips.
7/5/13
Today is the last day of the internship. I have just completed the bloodborne pathogen training (OSHA). This training helps prevent exposure and infiltration of blood borne pathogens. It also informs of how diseases like HBV, HIV, and HCV, can be transmitted through blood. Like if you get pricked with a needle. Later in the video, it talked about how disease can be transmitted overall in the workplace. Sanitizing an area is as simple as ¼ bleach and 1 gallon of water. Some objects need to put in red bags and labeled hazardous.
